If you’re going to go weird, go weird. Or in the perpetrator’s own words, “weird and odd.”
Minnesota state Rep. Tom Hackbarth got caught packing a sidearm lurking around a St. Paul Planned Parenthood clinic. (But it’s OK! He has a conceal and carry permit!)
Still, have no fear, good citizens. He wasn’t running around gunning for an abortion doctor. It was, he told police, “a jealousy thing.” The 58-year-old from Anoka thought his girlfriend was in a cafe in the area and that he thought she might be with another man.
So apparently, reading between the lines of his own story, he wasn’t contemplating another abortion clinic assassination, but a regular old crime of passion. Glad that’s settled.
(To be fair, Hackbarth told police that he always carries the gun, and didn’t really hint in any way that he intended to use it on anyone.)
Update, Nov. 24: Turns out Hackbarth wasn’t a jealous boyfriend, but a concerned philanthropist. From the Star Tribune:
“Hackbarth said he had coffee with the woman on Nov. 15, and asked her to dinner the next night but she told him she couldn’t because of a commitment she had with a female friend in Highland Park. Hackbarth said he felt that she might have been seeing a man instead, so he parked his car and walked around the block looking for her car.”
“I was not a jealous boyfriend,” said Hackbarth, who is in the process of divorcing his wife of 25 years. “I was just trying to check up on her. It’s totally a misunderstanding.”
