Glory Days

This was my first brush with the disappointments of fame. After my college newspaper, The UW-Eau Claire Spectator, ran this image in 1987, I was approached by not one prospective groupie.

The original caption read:

Folk-rock combo

Envelopment, a band made up of UW-Eau Claire students (left to right) Kevin Featherly, Jeff Gauss and Bill Rucci, perform in front of Harpo’s Sunday morning during the Old Towne Water Street Celebration.

  1. Long I remember how you inveighed against bands that lacked “The” names. Imagine my glee when I learned you were playing with a group called “Envelopment.” Harpos, is it still there?

    • As I recall, the name was inspired by the Grateful Dead. They had a song called “Cryptical Envelopment,” which they performed pretty early on. I have a recording of it recorded at the Minneapolis Labor Temple in 1969. But I wasn’t the Deadhead of the band, really. Like my most recent band, the Oarsmen, the band name existed before I joined.

Don’t know if Harpo’s still exists or not.
